In 1932 the Afsluitdijk was built which cut Enkhuizen off from the Zuiderzee (South Sea). This created the IJsselmeer lake.
The Zuiderzee museum was a fascinating day out. In the town of Enkhuizen is the Zuiderzee museum complex. The museum has 2 sections, one is indoor and the other is outdoors.
We only had time in one day to see the outdoor part of the museum. It was like walking around a village from long ago. There are houses which have been dismantled and rebuilt at the museum, many of which date back to the 1700/1800s. Most of the houses are open and the interiors have been recreated to show what life would have been like.
The information panels are written in Dutch, German and English.
The indoor part of the museum has displays of ships and fishing life.
