Delft was created from the weaving and brewing industries and the city dates from 1075.
In 1654 a huge explosion destroyed the original medieval town.  At the end of the 17th Century the centre was rebuilt, maintaining the Gothic and Renaissance architectural styles.
The town square or Markt are dominated by the  Stadhuis (Town hall) and Nieuwe Kerk (New Church)
