Martentoren (Martini Tower)

On a very miserable, wet and soggy day we hopped on the bus to Groningen.  This is the capital city of the Groningen province.  It is a typical busy capital city, undergoing a lot of change.  We saw many cranes and scaffolding on our visit.
We managed to dodge most of the showers.  However, should you ever find yourself in Groningen city and you need to use a WC - BEST OF BRITISH is all I can say!  This is one thing I have discovered in the Netherlands is the lack of public WCs.  The ones you do find often incur charges from between 25 and 50 cents.  After clocking up a fair number of steps (always a good thing when surrounded by lots of tasty pastries) - we ended up in McDonalds!  It cost 50cent for 2pees.  Plus, we then had some nuggets and chips as we both had an appetite!
There are the usual sites to see in Groningen - magnificent churches, towers, city hall, a main square surrounded by eating and drinking establishments.  There are also a plethora of shops including names familiar to any high street in the UK!
It is a city which is well worth the visit - but try for a drier day (and have one for the road before you go!)
