This was a destination I was really looking forward to visiting - Bourtange Fort.
It is shaped like a star with moats and is now both a real village and museum.
The central main square has a mixture of cafes, restaurant and shops. The shops sell antiquities, art, crafts, clothes, collectables and of course the mandatory tourist souvenirs.
The village is a maze of streets and narrow alleyways, where there are other businesses such as B&Bs, cafes, Delft workshop, art and museums.
I bought a ticket to go into the 8 very different museums, but actually you get a real feel for the history and importance of this once strategic defense.
