I had really been looking forward to getting to Avignon in the Provence region. Dreaming or hoping for drier weather, maybe even sunshine. After leaving Belfort we stayed for a night in Besancon then Lyon. If the weather had been better then we would have spent longer in both places.
In Avignon we stayed on a campsite on Bartheleuse Island called Camping Pont D'Avignon. From our pitch we had an amazing view of the Palais Des Papes. Avignon is famous for this amazing palace, inhabited by many popes when they were at their most powerful and influential. Each pope made their own additions and modifications to the Palais Des Popes or Palace of the Popes. Avignon is a walled city and full of beautiful sandstone coloured buildings, mazes of alleys and a mix of old and new.
We had 2 options of getting to the main city from the campsite, either turn left to take a 15 minute walk over the modern road bridge or turn right and take the free ferry across. The little ferry only runs on Wednesdays and weekends during the low season. They also have a long lunch break! We discovered the importance of lunch breaks were to the French during our travels.
As you can see from the photos my wishes came true and we had beautiful sunny days, mixed with the odd rainy day!
